One person killed in southeast Atlanta fire

Published on: 04/12/07 7:25 AM

An early morning blaze at a southeast Atlanta home left one man dead and two people, including a firefighter, injured, officials said.

The fire broke out shortly before 6 a.m. in a brick ranch-style house on Knox Drive, in a neighborhood off Constitution Road.

Atlanta fire Capt. Byron Kennedy said flames were through the roof of the house when firefighters arrived.

One person was able to escape the house with minor burns to the legs, but an adult male was trapped inside the house and died, Kennedy said.

A firefighter fell from the attic and injured his leg, Kennedy said.

The identity of the man killed was not immediately released. (Note: Mr. Charles Allen, Sr. was later identified as the person who died.)

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Kennedy did not know whether the house had a working smoke detector.
